ALGORITHMS, VIOLENCE
AND YOUTH IN BRAZIL

The study "Algorithms, Violence and Youth in Brazil: towards an educational model for Peace and Human Rights" investigated how access to violent content on social networks can influence young people to act violently on networks and in other spaces. The research assumes that education for peace and human rights can be an effective and urgent preventive measure.

The first phase of the study involved applying a questionnaire, which was open for two months and answered
by 216 individuals aged between 13 and 24 years
old from different regions of Brazil.

In the second phase, a researcher opened an account on a social network to imitate the live experience of an Internet user, observing the recommendation of bullying videos and materials that promote violence.

84.3% OF YOUNG PEOPLE HAVE ALREADY ENCOUNTERED VIOLENT CONTENT AND/OR DISCRIMINATORY, HUMILIATING OR DISTURBING VIDEOS ON SOCIAL MEDIA

26.4% OF YOUNG PEOPLE STATED THAT WATCHING VIOLENT VIDEOS IN SOME WAY MOTIVATED THEM TO VERBALLY OR PHYSICALLY ATTACK OTHER PEOPLE

15.3% OF YOUNG PEOPLE STATED THAT THEY COMMITTED VERBAL AND/OR PHYSICAL ATTACKS AFTER WATCHING VIOLENT CONTENT ON NETWORKS

In addition to the study with recommendations for the whole society to face this challenge, we have also prepared Support Material for Educators on Violence and Culture of Peace, offering concepts and tools to discuss the topic in the classroom, and also a Chat Card Game to the whole family reunite, have fun and reflect about it.
